 Who We Are

The Vanderbilt Shoulder Center is a new subspecialty initiative of the Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute and Vanderbilt Sports Medicine.  The Shoulder is considered by many to be the  most complicated joint in the body.  Our physicians have unparalleled expertise in treating disorders of the shoulder through subspecialty training and experience.  In addition to treating patients with any disorder affecting the shoulder, the Vanderbilt Shoulder Center is committed to educating others about the wonders of the shoulder, and conducting clinical and laboratory research to better understand the pathology of the shoulder and the  best treatment methods.

 Our Mission:

To improve the lives of any active individual with a shoulder injury, through science, education and clinical skill

 Comprehensive Rehabilitation

The shoulder moves more than any other joint in the body.  As such the anatomy o the shoulder and the problems that affect the shoulder are unique.  The Vanderbilt Shoulder Center applies a multidisciplinary approach to treat shoulder pathology.  In addition to physicians and surgeons, you will likely work closely with physical therapists and athletic trainers as we help bring your shoulder back to great health.  The Vanderbilt Shoulder Center is unique in employing shoulder rehabilitation specialists that are available on site.  This allows our rehabilitation professionals the opportunity to communicate directly and openly with your physician.  In fact, it is not unusual for your therapist to attend the clinic visits with your physician.  We strongly feel the combined approach offers the best method to solve your shoulder problems.

 Education

The Vanderbilt Shoulder Center physicians and specialists in shoulder rehabilitation lecture across the country, teaching other physicians, therapists, and other care providers about diagnosis and treatment of shoulder conditions.  Locally, in addition to teaching medical students and residents, we offer an outstanding opportunities for instruction in the subspecialty of shoulder surgery in our fellowship program.  We also host international experts in our annual Vanderbilt Shoulder Conference offered to regional physicians who have an interest in the shoulder.

What type of shoulder injury do we treat?

As Shoulder specialists. we treat any pathology that affects the shoulder, from simple problems like shoulder instability, the athlete with shoulder pain, and rotator cuff tendonitis, to more complex problems such as shoulder fractures, shoulder arthritis, massive rotator cuff tears, sternoclavicular joint problems, and revision shoulder surgeries.  Here are some of the common conditions that may be affecting your shoulder with links to additional educational material:
