Pediatric Sports Medicine Fellowship Program

Vanderbilt Sports Medicine offers a two-year post-graduate program in primary care sports medicine. Our mission is to provide excellent patient care in our clinics and to our athletes; education within sports medicine, orthopaedics and primary care specialties, the community and across the nation; and to be a leading force in basic science and clinical research. Fellows will spend their first year rotating amongst the attending physicians. The second year gives the fellow the time to hone in on the area of special interest. In addition, the fellow will have additional time in the second year to finish a research project.

Clinical activity

Fellows will rotate among primary care sports medicine physicians and orthopaedic surgeons. Fellows will be exposed to a variety of sports injuries from simple to complex. Fellows will travel bi-weekly to our outreach clinics located in Paducah, KY and Murray, KY. In addition, fellows will spend 1⁄2 day per week in a continuity clinic within their specialty.

Research

Fellows will have dedicated research time with opportunities in evidence based clinical medicine and basic science research. Fellows will be expected to produce at least one publishable manuscript and will gain experience in grant writing technique.

Team Physician Experience

Fellows will experience covering collegiate athletics at Vanderbilt and Belmont Universities, as well as, 27 area high schools, mass events and one professional team, the Nashville Sounds.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is based on the ACGME curriculum for primary care sports medicine. Fellows will attend a weekly orthopaedic conference, bi-weekly primary care sports medicine conference, weekly research meeting and monthly journal club. In addition, fellows will have the opportunity to attend the resident lecture series and grand rounds.

Conferences

Fellows will be sponsored to attend an AMSSM Research conference in August, as well as, the annual SEACSM and AMSSM conferences. In addition, if the fellow is chosen to present at a conference, the fellow will be sponsored for that conference as well.

The Pediatric Sports Medicine fellowship was established in 1993 under the direction of Paul Stricker, MD and Kurt Spindler, MD.  Dr. Gregory took over as director in 2001.  The program was accredited in 2003.  We have had eight fellows complete the program and are proud of what they have accomplished in the field of sports medicine.  The following is where our past fellows are now:

Alex Diamond, DO

Vanderbilt Sports Medicine and the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program are pleased to announce Alex Diamond, DO wil be continuing with us as our 2008-09 fellow. Dr. Diamond earned a BA in Sociology from Duke University in 1998 and is a 2003 graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. He completed a residency in Pediatrics at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, PA in 2007. He enjoys sports, photography, hiking and music.

Kristina Wilson, MD

Vanderbilt Sports Medicine and the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program are pleased to announce Kristina Wilson, MD as our 2008-09 clinical fellow. Dr. Wilson is a 2005 graduate of University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno, NV. She will complete a pediatric residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ in June. Dr. Wilson is married to a family practice physician who will be joining her in Nashville. She enjoys athletics, especially swimming and running, music, piano and clarinet.
